Cerebral and Spinal Angiography

An angiogram is a study that allows the physician to see blood vessels. Angiography, the diagnostic study of blood vessels, is based on x-ray technology, and is utilized by Weill-Cornell's Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Department to visualize both normal and abnormal blood vessels in the brain and spinal cord. Often, four-vessel cerebral angiography is used to assess the four primary arteries carrying blood to the brain.

Angiography can also be used during an open operation on the brain or spinal cord, allowing the surgeon to see if an aneurysm or other vascular abnormality has been repaired without damage to normal vessels. In addition, many vascular lesions can be treated directly at the time of angiography with a minimally based treatment. This includes the interventional neuroradiologic treatment of aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, carotid occlusive disease and tumor embolization.
