Chairman, Dr. Philip E. Stieg, Hosts Patterson Celebration: Professorship Launched
On December 5th, Dr. Philip E. Stieg hosted a day and evening to celebrate the remarkable career of Dr. Russel H. Patterson and to launch the Russel and Julie Patterson Professorship in Neurological Surgery. An educational forum was held at the Rockefeller Auditorium. Welcome remarks were given by Drs. David P. Hajjar and Dr. Laura Forese. Dr. Stieg then delivered a retrospective on the history of neurological surgery at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center going back to 1932. The historical timeline included news reels and news reports, reports on research advancements, music of the various eras, and highlighted the outstanding accomplishments of Dr. Patterson, a pioneer in the field of translation research and Cushing Medal Recipient . Dr. Patterson served as Neurosurgeon-in-Charge at NewYork-Cornell for 25 years. Dr. Stieg's speech also included segments on Julie Patterson, her work with the Visiting Nurse Service of NewYork and the N.Y.C. School Volunteer Program. Julie has taught extensively and has worked with the children of addicted mothers. The Patterson's have been married for 53 years and have 3 children.

Following Dr. Stieg's speech, speakers from the Department of Neurological Surgery at NewYork-Cornell, as well as honored guests from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University (including Nobel Laureate Dr. Paul Greengard), and the University of Southern California delivered reports on breakthroughs in research and minimal access surgical techniques for the brain and spine. Topics ranged from Epilepsy, Intracranial Aneurysm Treatments and Spine Disease, to Stem Cells for Brain & Spine Tumors and Depression.
The evening portion of the event was held at the St. Regis Hotel where an oil painting of the Pattersons, who have been life-long supporters of the art world, was unveiled. Artist: Patricia Watwood, www.patriciawatwood.com.
