Celebrating the Distinguished Work of a Select Group: Women in Neurosurgery (WINS)
Did you know that there are only close to 200 women neurosurgeons in America? A spike in the number of women neurosurgeons began after the year 2000. One of a select group, neurosurgeon Dr. Susan Pannullo, in the Department of Neurosurgery recently hosted an event for WINS, Women in Neurosurgery. The event, sponsored by companies including Stryker and EVI as well as the Department in kind, drew top female neurosurgeons from the Northeast sector. A highlight of the event was the launch of a new book, Heart of a Lion, Hands of a Woman: What Women Neurosurgeons Do, followed by a dinner in Griffis Faculty Club where speeches were given. Dr. Deborah L. Benzil, an editor of the book, noted the small number of women involved in the early days and how much they have achieved in a short span of time. A Certificate of Achievement was presented to Dr. Kathryn Ko, known as a champion of women's careers in neurosurgery.
